The book of Nehemiah is a profound description of the faithfulness of G-d. As I study this text, it becomes clear that Nehemiah was called to a heavenly task that surpassed his own power and intellect. It was through G-d’s power alone that he accomplished a spiritual renewal. This renewal is exactly what G-d’s people need today: a fundamental change from a mindset of defeat to one of kingdom purpose.
Understanding the Exile Mentality
The exile was not only about death and destruction; it was about shame. The children of Israel knew they were guilty, and they bore the humiliation of their failure. Many of us today live with this same “exile mentality.” We feel defeated, hopeless, and uncertain. But the message of Nehemiah is that through G-d, and only through G-d, this mentality can be destroyed. You cannot remove it yourself; you must be a recipient of what G-d is going to do.
The Power of Divine Comfort
The name Nehemiah (Nejemyá) is significantly linked to the word comfort. We see this in Capernaum, the “village of comfort,” where our Messiah began His ministry. Biblical comfort is not just a feeling; it always relates to a change that results in restoration to the will of G-d. Until you become committed to the will of G-d, you will not experience His provision, His presence, or His perspective. Restoration begins when we approach Him humbly and submissively.
Acknowledge Reality to Move Past It
When I heard the report about the walls of Jerusalem being breached and the gates burned with fire, I sat down and wept. I fasted and prayed before the G-d of the heavens. You cannot deny reality; you must acknowledge the suffering and the shame so that G-d can bring you through it. Nehemiah recognized that G-d is an awesome G-d who keeps His covenant and extends grace (chesed). This grace moves in our lives to bring us into obedience so that we can accomplish His purposes.
Conclusion
Though I held a secure and wealthy position as the cupbearer to the king, G-d called me to something greater. We must be willing to lose everything in this life to have the privilege of being a servant to the living G-d. When you say “yes” to G-d and align with His kingdom plans, life becomes meaningful and exciting. Do not underestimate the significance of G-d’s call on your life; it is the only way to experience true victory and joy.
